1205-ben Wynch Inferiorként jelenik meg az írott forrásokban. 1393-ban már oppidum Alsowinc a neve.
A 11./12. században német telepesek lakják. Ebből a korból származik első temploma. A helyén épült templom a 14. századból való, amely a reformáció után a reformátusoké lesz. Szent Katalin tiszteletére volt szentelve.
1264-ben a szatmári főesperes, János egyben alvinci plébános is. 1361-ben fr. Alardus a domonkos kolostor priorja. Templomuk Szűz Mária nevét viselte. Ezen kolostor utódja a Martinuzzi kastély, amelyben 1551-ben meggyilkolták Fráter Györgyöt. A második világháború után a kollektív gazdaságok lefoglalták a kolostort, akik csak romokat hagytak hátra. A reformációt követően a katolikus élet csak 1725-ben indul újra, amikor bolgár ferencesek és hívek menekülnek ide, és akiket gyarapítanak a Bethlen Gábor által Alvincre telepített habánok is. Kolostortemplomuk 1729-ben épül. Ez ma is a plébániatemplom. A második világháború után, 1948-tól egyházmegyés papok gondozzák.
1990-től a kolostort felújítják, és Pongrácz Szent István néven tanulmányi házként működik. A templom és a kolostor általános belső javítására 2009-ben került sor.
Itt született Pongrácz Szent István jezsuita, a kassai vértanúk egyike (1582–1619. szeptember 7.). Alvincen született ugyanakkor br. Kemény Zsigmond író is (1814–1875).

For World Mission Day 2026, which marks the centenary of a celebration established by Pius XI that is very dear to the Church, I have chosen the theme “One in Christ, united in mission.” Following the Jubilee Year, I wish to encourage the whole Church to continue its missionary journey with joy and zeal in the Holy Spirit.

Each year the World Day of Migrants and Refugees invites us to turn our attention to different aspects of the complex phenomenon of migration. For this 112th World Day, the theme, “Even just one of these children,” draws our attention to the minors directly involved in the experience of migration and flight, to the care owed to them, and to the Lord’s promise that “whoever receives one such child in my name receives me” (Mk 9:37).

Dear brothers and sisters, the path before us is clear, though it is not easy. We are called to allow our hearts to be renewed, so that we might seek peace and care for creation. Scripture tells us to guard our hearts, for everything we do flows from them (cf. Prov 4:23).
